Reading 1: Creation

(Click here to read Genesis 1:1 - 2:25)

This is a pretty hefty chunk to get us going with E100!
It is encouraging to note that God looks on each stage of his creation and sees that 'it was good'. There can be a tendency to think of created things as being somehow inferior to 'heavenly' things, but this passage contradicts that.

Creation remains good - even today - despite the damage that mankind has inflicted upon it, and God still sees that goodness and still cares for it. He has not abandoned his creation: far from it - ultimately he gave his Son to redeem the world and to create both a 'new heaven and a new earth'.

Notice too the 'dividing' and 'filling' processes. The first three days of creation were spent separating things: light from dark, waters above from waters below, waters from land. Then began the process of filling: the land was filled with vegetation, the heavens with lights (sun, moon, stars), the waters with sea creatures and finally, on the sixth day, the land was filled with animals and man.

A very clear emphasis is that Man is made in God's image: the three-fold repetition of 1:27 underscores this assertion. Man is not simply another animal, despite what some evolutionists might claim. We share plenty with animals, of course, but this passage makes it clear that we are a very special kind of animal, sharing in the nature of God himself.

There is a lot more that I could say, but this is my first attempt at a blog and I am interested in what other people think.

Why don't you post a comment in the box below? It's easy to do and we'd love to know what you think about this passage - go on, have a go!
